GLOBAL REAL ESTATE SUSTAINABILITY BENCHMARK (GRESB)

AvalonBay participates annually in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) and has, for the second year in a row, been named a Global and Regional Sector Leader in the 2020 Real Estate Assessment, a benchmark which covers more than 1,000 property companies, real estate investment trusts (REITs), funds, and developers. For the first time, AvalonBay has also received 5-stars, the highest achievement for GRESB. Each year GRESB assesses and benchmarks the environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of real assets worldwide and monitors progress towards global sustainability goals. We have been a member of GRESB since 2016.

CDP

On an annual basis, AvalonBay participates in disclosing information to CDP, a not-for-profit organization that runs a global ESG disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. In 2021, CDP scored nearly 12,000 companies and AvalonBay is proud to recognized for our leadership in corporate sustainability by being named to CDP's prestigious "A" list. CDP also recognizes organizations tackling climate change in their supply chain. AvalonBay is thrilled to be designated a CDP 2021 Supplier Engagement Leader placing us in the top 8% of all companies who disclosed to the full climate questionnaire.

NAREIT LEADER IN THE LIGHT AWARD

NAREIT's annual Leader in the Light Awards honor NAREIT member companies that have demonstrated superior and sustained sustainability practices. We are proud, for the second year in a row, to be the 2020 recipient of the NAREIT Residential Leader in the Light Award. This is the highest achievement for all residential REITs and real-estate companies, and reflects our commitment to social and environmental sustainability. We also received the award in 2019, 2015, 2013 and 2012.

AVALONBAY NAMED TO NEWSWEEK'S LIST OF AMERICA'S MOST RESPONSIBLE COMPANIES 2021

For the second year, Newsweek and Statista honored America's Most Responsible Companies based on publicly available key performance indicators derived from CSR Reports, Sustainability Reports, and Corporate Citizenship Reports as well as an independent survey. AvalonBay placed #122 out of 399 (moving the list up from #193 out of 300 in 2020), which were selected from the top 2,000 public companies by revenue with headquarters in the U.S.

AVALONBAY NAMED TO CR MAGAZINE’S 100 BEST CORPORATE CITIZENS LIST

For the third year in a row, AvalonBay Communities was named to the CR Magazine 100 Best Corporate Citizens list ranking #53 out of the 1,000 largest U.S public companies. 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranks the entire Russell 1000 Index on 134 ESG factors. ISS, the responsible investment research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services, conducts the research. There are seven pillars in the ranking: climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights and stakeholders and society.

FTSE4GOOD INDEX SERIES

AvalonBay has been confirmed, for the third year in a row, as a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. Created by the global index provider FTSE Russell, the FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. The FTSE4Good indices are used by a wide variety of market participants to create and assess responsible investment funds and other products.

2020 WOMEN ON BOARDS

AvalonBay has been recognized by 2020 Women on Boards as a Winning ‘W’ Company. 2020 Women on Boards is a global education and public advocacy campaign that advocates for corporations to meet or exceed 20 percent of women directors on their boards by the year 2020. Companies receiving the ‘W’ Company recognition have boards of directors with 20 percent or more women members.

EURONEXT VIGEO EIRIS INDEX US 50

In 2018, for the third year, AvalonBay was included in the Euronext Vigeo index US 50. The index distinguishes the 50 most advanced companies in the US region based on their environmental, social and governance performance. Companies included in this index have achieved the highest scores based on the review of up to 330 ESG indicators assessed by the agency following the Equitics methodology.

ENR TOP 100 GREEN BUILDING CONTRACTORS

AvalonBay is ranked 37 on the ENR Top 100 Green Building Contractor List 2020. The list tracks annual contracting revenue from projects registered with and actively seeking sustainable-design standards certification from 3rd-party ratings groups such as USGBC and LEED.

ECPI Indices Constituent

In 2015 AvalonBay became a constituent of ECPI indices, a status we maintained through 2017. ECPI is a leading rating and index company dedicated to environmental, social and governance research since 1997. ECPI indices are used for benchmarking, thematic investment, risk management purposes and to create index-tracking investment strategies or ETF’s.

STOXX GLOBAL ESG LEADERS INDICES

AvalonBay is pleased to have been included in the STOXX Global ESG Leaders indices. The STOXX ESG index families include companies that are leaders in terms of environmental, social and governance criteria.

ISS ESG Corporate Rating

ISS ESG Corporate Rating analyzes up to 100 sector-specific ESG criteria to determine the comprehensiveness of an organization's ESG management. AvalonBay is pleased to be awarded the ISS ESG Prime Label, which serves as an indicator of the quality of a company's performance in the social and environmental spheres. Prime status is awarded to companies with ESG performance above the sector-specific threshold fulfilling ambitious absolute performance requirements. We are proud to be in the company of other transformative organizations also carrying the ISS ESG Prime Label.
